Jack Straw – what’s his point about veils?

Can anyone take Jack Straw seriously over his pronouncement about female Moslem constituents removing their veils when visiting his MP’s surgery?
To me it seems like cheap political posturing, calculated to raise his profile with the press and influence public opinion, following in the wake of John Reid’s “success” in calling for Moslem parents to watch for signs of terrorist inclinations among their offspring?
Even the government aren’t prepared to swallow this and have left him out in the cold with his comments.
How does Jack imagine blind people get by when they cant see anyone’s face? Maybe he believes they’re in a constant state of uncertainty as to the meaning of their everyday contacts with the rest of humanity.
